A Path to Freedom. One Layer at a Time.
The mind is lazy and loves routine: known thoughts, known ideas keep us in this comfortable place of non creativity. We get caught in the idea of ourselves being free and open-minded, because we think we are curious but the thought proliferation that we call new ideas stemming from the same old mind wires only produces the same.
Any man who reads too much and uses his own brain too little falls into lazy habits of thinking. Albert Einstein
What the creative mind really needs is proper training and maintenance. This is what meditation is about. Muscle toning your mind, breaking it free from decades of lazy habits, judgments, concepts that became hard like stone and which define your reality.
Creativity happens in this space of non judgment, non action, non duality.
I have recently re-opened a book that is laying on my shelf for years: Danielou’s myths and gods of India. It’s quite heavy reading and not the browse from top to end in a go. But it made me a very interesting gift this week, in the form of a quote from the Upanishads:
Where there is duality, you feel an Other, you taste an Other, you see an Other, you hear an Other, you smell an Other, you think of an Other, you understand an Other. But when everything is only Itself, then who could be felt by what? who could be tasted by what? who could be seen by what?…
Changing our perspective is the beginning of emptying our mind from established beliefs.
Go around and watch things as if there were no looker but focus on your awareness that sees. Forget yourself, forget your eyes and the spectacle ahead of you. Instead of focusing on the flower, focus on the awareness that brings the sight to life. Go around and listen to things as if there were no listener but focus on your awareness that hears…
This creates a space of freedom where creativity really happens. It’s amazing how our grasp of life changes with just this practice.
Suddenly every familiar object, every known sound, every emotion… become a new possibility, an infinite possibility.
